Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck twice from corners in the first half to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the tally a short while after the defender's first goal, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of excellent saves to ensure the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising the match official to check the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates the manager's team into third place in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and are six points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in role at both ends of the field

Following a uninspiring midweek display in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a only attempts on target, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to score.

And the captain - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - notched his second in first-half stoppage time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defensive duties, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the duo handled superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have worn off slightly and supporters flocked to the gates after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The break in the team's winning streak at home won't be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's two established strikers - had netted only one league goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor record on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having room and time to reposition for a simpler shot that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, too, was unable to make an impact after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. Most of the home side's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Spurs penalty area.

Everton: Moyes' men head to Sunderland in the Premier League on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: Spurs go to Newcastle's ground on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round League Cup match against the Magpies.
